A white floor surface and four musicians – that is all that dancer Samantha van Wissen needs to take her audience into the fascinating world of «Giselle». What begin as a lecture / performance soon reveals itself as a wonderfully tender and humorous declaration of love for Adolphe Adam’s masterpiece of ballet in particular and for dance in general.

Director François Gremaud takes an ironic look at this classic without ever losing the dedication to elegance of the original. With a glint in her eye, Samantha explains the conventions of romantic ballet which no longer want to fit in with modern times. And then you find yourself getting lost in the sheer fascination of the music and wishing against your better judgment that Giselle did not have to die.

«Giselle» is the second part of a trilogy by François Gremaud designed in conjunction with the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne, dealing with great female tragic figures from theatre, dance and opera. As was the case with the first part of the trilogy, «Phèdre!» in 2019, «Giselle» was invited to the Schweizer Theatertreffen in 2022.
