Vision | Revolt | Liberation
Classical ballet meets street art, while contemporary dance meets hip-hop and breakdance. What sounds like a potential clash turns out to be a recipe for success. These two hip-hop choreographers from France have been thrilling a wide variety of audiences across Europe with their latest indoor performance entitled “Le Grand Bal”. In it, they explore the phenomenon of dance fever and how this affects people.
Amid a climate of isolation, social tensions and incredible sombreness, the performance poses the question of what happens when the body breaks down. Fever envelopes the stage, a shudder gradually goes through the nine-strong group, until relief is finally at hand… “Le Grand Bal” is a ceremony of liberation. The captivating choreography sends the dancers into a trance and soon spills over. A collective feeling of euphoria sees the revolt reach a crescendo which goes far beyond the confines of the stage. What Souhail Marchiche and Mehdi Meghari have achieved with their Compagnie Dyptik is incredible art which reflects the spirit of the times.
