Hanna | Clown | Memento mori
Although we were obviously all part of our own procreation, at least at the grand finale, we have no idea how it all came about. First, there was nothing, then: pop, and out I came!
Throughout nine previous plays to date in different scenarios, Hanna, the clownesque alter ego of Gardi Hutter, has told comic tales of failure. The stories, about a washerwoman, a witch, a mouse, a secretary, a circus clown, an actor, a theatre prompt and a tailor, all came to a tragicomic end. This was topped by the most recent play, Gaia Gaudi, where a hilarious decomposition process sees Hanna the clown disappear into a suitcase and then cast out of the world. And now she is floating around as a spirit in the empty room, almost in distilled form, almost as an essence. The key word being ‘almost’. Is this another failure, or the ultimate in freedom? Together with director Michael Vogel, Gardi Hutter has dreamt up and penned her tenth play. And in this one, it really is all or nothing.
We are born, and then at some point, we die. Memento mori! Seemingly hypnotised, we look to our own ends, grasping at art, philosophy, religion and science, and yet nothing can change. Instead of focusing on the end of life, «gardiZERO» looks at it from the beginning, and how something comes out of nothing, how 0 becomes 1.
