Antihero | Petty bourgeois | Traitor
«Der Herr Karl» is a scandalous play, a monologue that made history, and here in Nikolaus Habjan’s interpretation, it is a fascinating example of puppet theatre. When Carl Merz and Helmut Qualtinger’s «Der Herr Karl» was first performed in 1961, it created quite a stir. An opportunistic petty bourgeois talks seemingly harmlessly about his life, but mercilessly unmasks the repressed Nazi past of so many average Austrians. It became a cult drama and a milestone in political theatre, and is as relevant today as it was at its premiere.
