Ever since Qudus Onikeku left Paris to return to his native Lagos, he has been working with young dancers from Nigeria with no classical or western dance training. The result is «Re:Incarnation» – a dance evening full of the urban chaos of the Nigerian capital and Afrobeat.

Reincarnation is central to the culture of the Yoruba – not merely in the religious sense but also as an overall state of mind that takes into account the cyclical nature of time and space. The juxtaposition of the Yoruba culture and its connection with contemporary dance is a central theme of this piece by Onikeku, who also draws on traditional Nigerian dance, hip hop, capoeira and acrobatics for his works, enabling him to create an exceptional language of movement.

Qudus Onikeku is not merely a choreographer – he is also a curator and a performance- and installation artist. His works have been performed at such events as the Biennale, the Festival d’Avignon and the Kalamata Dance Festival, and now Culturescapes is bringing his powerful rhythmic choreographies to Zug.
