The Myths subscription series is dedicated to the great narratives of humanity – in drama, dance, music, and opera. The focus is on classical and contemporary myths, reinterpreted by outstanding artists and companies.

Experience, for example, Icarus' legendary flight to the sun, impressively staged by the Compagnie Hervé Koubi. The myth of the Knight of the Sad Countenance, inspired by Cervantes' famous novel, is retold in a musical interpretation by the lautten compagney BERLIN. Sophocles' tragedy about the guilt of Oedipus demonstrates the timeless power of ancient material. In his dialect comedy “De Franzos im Ybrig,” Swiss author Thomas Hürlimann illuminates national myths with subtle humor. Mozart's opera “The Magic Flute” also unfolds its transformative, mythical power. Finally, in the musical theater piece “Mythos,” the encounter between tradition and the present gives rise to a modern myth.

Each performance in the Myths subscription series is accompanied by an in-depth thematic talk – an opportunity for anyone who wants to experience the origins, significance, and impact of myths in theater, dance, and music more intensively.

This season, selected performances will once again be followed by in-depth discussions with experts and the artists involved. The focus will be on the myths of the world. Myths continue to enjoy unbroken popularity. But is this justified? What do they tell us about the past, present, and future—and about ourselves as human beings? Myths are stories. Myths are untrue stories, lies, and deceptions. Myths are timeless truths. Myths are models that shape our collective actions and experiences. Myths are constantly being rewritten, based on playful and free variation, and are in constant flux. Myths can also become ideologies and thus dangerous. That is what the themed talks will be about.
