Classical | Romantic | South American
This concert offers a rare opportunity to experience South American and European culture from the perspective of songs with piano. The programme combines European and South American traditions and classical repertoires, where spirited rhythms and lyrical moments melt into one another, creating a bond between Europe and South America. On the one hand, there is the romance and structure of Europe, on the other, there is South America – a melting pot with rich indigenous and African musical influences.
Mezzosoprano Josy Santos hails originally from Brazil. She studied opera singing in São Paolo and Frankfurt, began her operatic career in Biel and Lucerne and now sings in the greatest opera venues around the world. The juxtaposition of South American and European musical cultures is dear to her heart. Her life currently centres around Zug, and as such it is high time that local audiences get to know this incredible singer. In Markus Hadulla, an expert in German song who has already performed with numerous stars while working in Vienna as a professor of song interpretation, she has found the ideal partner.
The concert begins with Europe, and Dvorák’s gipsy songs, Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder and a selection of German songs by Brazilian composer Alberto Nepomuceno. The second – South American – half features Ginastera’s Las Cinco Canciones Argentinas and Ernani Braga’s Cinco Canções Nordestinas, telling tales of traditions, cultures, love and plurality.
