It is not always spoken word that is at the heart of drama, stories or theatre – music can have this effect. This is the case with Dmitri Shostakovich’s score of «Hamlet», which gives the Russian film of the Shakespeare play the impact that could not have come from language alone. Camille Saint-Saëns also saw his first cello concerto from a dramatic point of view. The solo instrument takes on the leading role and makes its way through a coherent set as if it were a three-act story. In this third season-ticket concert, young Zug cellist Emilie Richter is the leading lady. With the incidental music to «A Midsummer Night’s Dream», Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy portrays Shakespeare in a different vein from Shostakovich, as a world of fairy magic, frivolity and dreams unfolds in a light, transparent way full of contrasts.

Famous Swiss stage and film actor Stefan Kurt presents this concert, featuring Swiss conductor Simon Gaudenz, general musical director of the Jena Philharmonic and chief conductor of the Hamburger Camerata.
