In an outstanding final Zuger Klassik Abo subscription concert of the 2026/27 season, the Zuger Sinfonietta, with chief conductor Daniel Huppert, presents three surprising masterpieces which are all but unrivalled in their variety and depth.
The evening begins with Frederick Delius’ «La Calinda» and its echoes of Afro-American music traditions. It is a seductive dance from the opera «Koanga» featuring voodoo rituals. Delius encountered resistance to the opera for a number of years from British theatres, who found it too exotic and challenging. The world premiere finally took place in 1904 in Wuppertal and was well received by the audience.
Sergey Prokofiev’s violin concerto No.1 in D Major Op.19 combines lyrical and melancholy elements with lively, rhythmical passages. It is a work full of the exuberance of youth and experimental tones. The dialogue between renowned South Korean violinist Soyoung Yoon and the orchestra will doubtless be a highpoint of the evening.
The night will be rounded out by Robert Schumann’s symphony No.1 in B♭ major Op.38 («Spring Symphony»), which came about in 1841 during a creative burst after his marriage to Clara Wieck. Schumann’s glistening melodies and dynamic energy embody the hope and the dawn of a new age, inspired by Adolf Böttger’s spring poem «Oh turn, turn your course».
