Which art form combines classical music and movement?
The answer is obviously ballet. And just how young, fresh and dynamic this combination can be is demonstrated by «Radical Classical», performed by the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS and directed by choreographer, dancer and musician Eric Gauthier. The JUNIORS perform modern ballet and illustrate how it can make you fall in love with classical music at the same time.
Seven renowned choreographers showcase works by Strauss, Beethoven, Debussy and others in performances that can be humorous, erotic and thought-provoking but are always virtuoso. Andreas Heise’s «Frühlingsstimmen» sees seven dancers glide like shimmering swans to Strauss' waltzes. Eric Gauthier’s «Orchestra of the Wolves» transforms Beethoven’s fifth into a comical wolf hunt. Marie Chouinard’s interpretation of Debussy’s «Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune» shocks with its mystical creature that pushes the physical limits of the body. Aszure Barton’s «Lascilo Perdere» fascinates with a five-minute kiss to Vivaldi, Ohad Naharin’s «B/olero» entices with dynamic duets, while Mauro de Candia’s «La morte del Cigno» forges radical new ground for Saint-Saëns’ «Dying Swan» and Marco Goecke’s «FURIA (für Gudrun)» moves with delicate intensity and Baroque music. Each piece has a short film to introduce it, and the eight young dancers master all styles with bravura in what is a radical night of ballet for anyone aged 16 and over.
