Opportunism | Self-deception | Follow-the-leader
Max Frisch’s «Biedermann und die Brandstifter» is the tale of a man who ignores clear and present danger. Two arsonists take up lodgings in his house and openly start preparing their next attack. Despite obvious indications, Biedermann ignores the threat and even ends up helping them. The play is a vicious and yet humorous parable on self-deception, which rings true today with the rise of populism and how society can trivialise certain matters. Elias Perrig’s production emphasises Biedermann’s responsibility.
